History

Louis-François Cartier founded Cartier in 1847 after finishing his apprenticeship with master watchmaker Adolphe Picard. Louis-François also took over Adolphe’s workshop, which was located in 29 Rue Montorgueil, Paris. When Louis-François took over the workshop, he built a name for himself by creating jewelry that satisfied the extravagant taste of Europeans. He also became Princess Mathilde’s (Napoleon III’s cousin) favorite jewelry maker.

Alfred Cartier Louis-François’s son took over the family business in 1874. And in 1898, the company moved to 13 Rue de la Paix, where the business still operates today. Rue de la Paix is located on one of Paris’ luxurious shopping streets, an excellent Cartier boutique location. As Cartier quickly gained international recognition, it also opened boutiques in London in 1902 and New York in 1909 to cater to the rapidly growing affluent population.

In 1899, Louis-François managed the Paris branch, where he also designed wristwatches and mystery clocks, and Art Deco designs even influenced some.

Pierre Cartier managed the business until he died in 1964. His nephews Jean-Jacques, Claude, and his daughter Marion – who manages the Cartier business in London, New York, and Paris – decided to sell the businesses.

Robert Hocq and a group of investors bought Cartier Paris in 1972. The group also bought Cartier London and Cartier New York in 1974 and 1976, respectively.

Today, Cartier remains to be synonymous with luxury jewelry and watches. The brand is also popular in the resale market so sell your Cartier watch today for the best prices!

Cartier Watches

Cartier watches came into inception when Alberto Santos-Dumont, a Brazilian pilot, told Louis Cartier about how pocket watches are undependable when flying. Louis then thought of ways to make timekeeping easier when flying. He then created Cartier’s first wristwatch, which was smaller, flat, and has a unique square bezel. The wristwatch was named “Santos” for Alberto Santos-Dumont. Cartier signed an agreement with Edmond Jaeger of Jaeger LeCoultre to exclusively make watch movements for Cartier. Below are some of the most popular Cartier watch models that are popular in the second-hand watch market.
