History

On May 1, 1839, Czech-born Polish master watchmaker Franciszek Czapek and Polish watchmaker Antoni Patek established Patek, Czapek & Cie in Geneva, Switzerland. Their company specialized in making pocket watches. However, due to several disputes within the company, they decided to go separate ways and had the company liquidated on April 18, 1845.

On May 15, 1845, Antoni Patek established a new company Patek & Cie, with his new business partner, French watchmaker Adrien Philippe who invented the keyless winding mechanism. The company officially changed its name to Patek, Philippe & Cie on January 1, 1851. Queen Victoria received a Patek Philippe keyless pendant watch at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 as well. The watch was adorned with rose-cut diamonds arranged to make it look like a bouquet. Patek Philippe also made the first Swiss-made wristwatch for the Countess Koscowicz of Hungary.

When Antoni Patek died in March 1877, his son Léon Mecyslas Vincent decided not to take over his father’s business. As a result, one of Adrien Patek’s sons-in-law, Joseph Antoine Bénassy-Philippe, took over Antoni’s position in the company. The Calatrava Cross became the company’s official logo in 1887.

In 1932, the company was acquired by Charles and Jean Stern of the Swiss Stern family and had been family-owned. In 1935, Patek Philippe was introduced to the United States by a New York-based company, Henri Stern Watch Agency.

Today, Patek Philippe is recognized as one of the top three watch brands globally, along with Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin.

Production

Patek Philippe manufactures its watch parts, from the tiny parts to the springs that give the watch life. The company mostly makes watches with automatic movements with manual or automatic winding apparatus. Patek Philippe also gave rise to watches with complications – functions that go beyond showing hours, minutes, and seconds – like perpetual calendar, chronograph, split-seconds hand, and a minute repeater.  With these details, a Patek Philippe watch does not really depreciate in value, so when you sell your Patek Philippe watch you will get the best price for it.
