David Yurman began his jewelry career when he and his then-girlfriend painter Sybil Kleinrock relocated to upstate New York in the early 1970s. David and Sybil founded Putnam Art Works, which experimented with sculptural jewelry and became important figures in the American craft movement, particularly fine crafts and artisanal jewelry.
Later on, Yurman became one of the twelve jewelers chosen to exhibit at the first New Designer Gallery at the Retail Jewelers of America Show (RJA) in New York City in 1977, which is now considered a turning point in the history of traditional artisans and established merchandisers. Then, David Yurman became a pioneer in the new category of American designer jewelry in the 1980s and 1990s.
In 2003, Evan Yurman joined the company and became Design Director of the Men’s and Timepiece Collections in 2004. Later on, he began managing the company’s Wedding Line, which was launched in 2006, and pioneered an exclusive collection of high jewelry in 2009.
