Platinum Jewelry Value

Upon selling your platinum jewelry, it is evaluated for its value. Platinum jewelry’s value is based on several factors:

Purity – The amount or percentage of platinum in your jewelry is called purity. Platinum jewelry is typically an alloy—which means platinum that is mixed with other metals. Therefore, the higher the percentage of platinum in your jewelry, the higher the value of your platinum item becomes.

The purity of platinum jewelry is determined by its hallmark. For example, 850, 900, 950, or 999 will be stamped on your jewelry.

In addition to these numbers, check for the letters PLAT or PT on your platinum to ensure it is not silver or white gold.

Weight – Platinum is sold by ounces, so when you sell your platinum jewelry, it is carefully weighed to ensure the correct price per ounce.

Spot price The biggest factor in the price of your jewelry is the spot price of platinum. The spot price dictates platinum’s price per ounce.

Gemstones – If your platinum jewelry has gemstones on them, they are evaluated separately based on the gemstones’ standards.

Platinum is one of the rarest precious metals in the world. Its silvery-white lustrous appearance makes it stand out among other metals. Platinum is also more durable than its other counterparts, and it does not tarnish. Its chemical properties also make platinum hypoallergenic, which is ideal for someone who has sensitive skin. These qualities of platinum make it more appealing to jewelers and jewelry collectors.

Brief History

The ancient Egyptians were the first ones to use platinum in their jewelry. Moreover, historians and archeologists found traces of gold in ancient Egyptian gold jewelry. However, their knowledge of the metal was unknown, and they could not recognize platinum in gold.

The earliest reference to platinum were in the notes of Julius Caesar Scaliger, who discovered platinum in 1557. Unfortunately, the Spaniards also found white metals in Ecuador and treated them as an impurity of gold. As a result, people had to throw the metals back into the river.

Centuries later, in 1735, while traveling through Colombia and Peru, Spanish naval officers Antonio de Ulloa and Jorge Juan y Santacilia noticed Native Americans mining platinum. Ulloa and Juan brought back chunks of the whitish metals they found in mines back to Spain. So Antonio de Ulloa set up a mineralogy laboratory upon his return to Spain in 1748. And it was the first laboratory to thoroughly study platinum.

Platinum’s influence spread to the United States in the early 1900s, enthralling the American public. However, the US government declared platinum a strategic metal during World War II, prohibiting its use in jewelry. As a result, platinum had briefly become a forgotten art by the end of the war.
