History
In 1905, 24-year old watchmaker Hans Wildorf along with his brother-in-law Alfred Davis established Wilsdorf & Davis — which eventually became Rolex S.A. — where it was originally located at 83 Hatton Garden in London. Wilsdorf & Davis wanted to create affordable but high-quality watches. During the company’s early days, it relied heavily on importing Hermann Aegler’s Swiss watch mechanisms (also known as movements or calibre) and assembling them in watch cases made by Dennison and others. These watches were then sold to jewelers, who in turn put their names on the dial. These watches were commonly hallmarked with “W&D” in the caseback.
The name Rolex was trademarked in 1908. According to Wilsdorf, he wanted a brand name that can fit on the watch’s dial and can be pronounced easily in any language. In 1920, the company relocated to Geneva, Switzerland, a city famous for its watchmaking industry.
Today, Rolex remains to be one of the most popular watchmakers in the world.
