History

TAG Heuer SA is a Swiss company that specializes in designing and manufacturing luxury watches. It also markets watches, fashion accessories, eyewear, and mobile phones that are made by other companies but carry the TAG Heuer label.

In 1860, Edouard Heuer established Uhrenmanufaktur Heuer AG or Heuer Watchmaking Inc. in English in St. Imier, Switzerland. Edouard relied heavily on family leadership and innovation, which became the backbone of the company. He also opened his watchmaking shop on their family farm in 1864. Edouard eventually moved his shop to Bienne, a town in the canton of Bern, in 1867, where the company would operate for over a century.

The 1880s saw the rise of sporting competitions where the need for accurate chronographs was needed. Edouard went on to manufacture pocket chronographs, where he patented his first chronographs in 1882. The chronographs housed in a silver case later became a status symbol for sports enthusiasts.

After years of study and perfecting the chronograph, Edouard introduced a patent for the “oscillating pinion” in 1887. The oscillating pinion allowed the chronograph to start and stop with just a single push button. This magnificent innovation is still being used in chronographs today.

In 1916, Edouard’s son Charles-Auguste Heuer took over his father’s position as the company’s head. Charles-Auguste led the innovation of the chronograph that would eventually display a 1/50 and 1/100 of a second. Soon after, a split-second version of the chronograph was made to show the time difference between two competitors.

Because of the reliability and accuracy of TAG Heuer chronographs, they became the number one choice for timing sporting events. TAG Heuer became the supplier for chronographs in the 1920 Antwerp Olympic Games and the world championships in the winter games. Due to those events, TAG Heuer also became the primary choice timekeeper for motorsports, sailing, and so much more.

Today, TAG Heuer still remains to be a top choice for chronographs for sporting events, athletes, and sports enthusiasts.
